Usually I'm a big fan of the lynda.com tutorials/books. But this one felt somewhat disorganized and too fast to keep up with. Concepts weren't thoroughly covered and some black holes appeared when getting from point A to B.

I'm a php newbie and I wanna tell you this training is best among the books I've read and training I've watched. Kevin uses a lot of examples to clearly describe how control structures, functions and variables work, he also builds a content management system using what he teaches in first 11 chapters to show how all of the functions and variables and database work together. This book has helped out my understanding of PHP and MySQL very much. Everything was well thought out a nicely presented. I wished that some of the exercises would have been a little more in depth, but considering the object of the book I'd say it did a pretty good job.
As a beginner, I felt that the tutor is more interested in turning simple steps into complex ones rather than putting it straight. Might be, he wanted me to understand his expertise. Referring to few youtube videos and w3schools website really helped in understanding and filtering those complexity.
